The excursions were carefully planned to provide an enriching blend of education and adventure, allowing students to immerse themselves in the heart of Europe while enhancing their knowledge of European history, art, and politics.

Maastricht, a charming city in the southern Netherlands known for its medieval architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and historical importance. Located near the borders of Belgium and Germany, Maastricht has long been a crossroads of European culture, making it an ideal destination for an educational excursion.

Upon arriving in Maastricht, the students enjoyed a walking tour through the city’s historic center, which is filled with narrow streets, medieval buildings, and quaint squares. They explored landmarks such as the Basilica of Saint Servatius, a stunning Romanesque church dating back to the 6th century, and Vrijthof Square, one of the city's most iconic and picturesque locations. The students learned about the city’s history, from its Roman origins to its role in the signing of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, which laid the foundation for the creation of the European Union.

The Maastricht Treaty and European Integration

One of the key highlights of the visit to Maastricht was the opportunity to learn about the Maastricht Treaty, which was signed in the city and marked a significant moment in European history. The students visited the Maastricht Treaty Memorial, a site dedicated to the agreement that created the European Union as we know it today. This visit gave the students a deeper understanding of how European integration began and how the cooperation between European countries has evolved over the years.

The students were fascinated by the historical significance of the treaty and its impact on European politics and economics. The visit provided them with valuable insights into the foundations of the European Union, making it a perfect complement to their lessons at the Parlamentarium in Brussels.

A more adventurous part of the Maastricht visit was the exploration of the Caves of Maastricht, a network of underground tunnels that have been used for various purposes throughout history. The students took guided tours through these fascinating caves, learning about their role as a refuge during times of war and their use as a source of limestone in the city’s construction. The mysterious atmosphere of the caves added a touch of intrigue to the students' exploration, and they marveled at the complex underground network.

In addition to its historical landmarks, Maastricht is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, with a vibrant cultural scene and diverse food offerings. The students had time to enjoy the city’s lively cafes and restaurants, where they could taste Dutch delicacies and enjoy local specialties. The city’s relaxed vibe, combined with its rich history, made it an ideal place for the students to unwind and appreciate the beauty of European culture.
